Banagher, Offaly, Ireland

943. Banagher

'Well that beats Banagher' and the rejoiner, 'and Banagher beats the devil' are popular well-known sayings associated with this interesting, vibrant town, still a fording place on the lordly Shannon. Impressive fortifications guarding the river crossing are still to be seen. 'Beannchar na Sionna', according to local historian Val Trodd, means 'the place of the pointed rocks on the Shannon'. While stationed here in 1841 - as a post office clerk , Anthony Trollope wrote his first novel. A strong tourism presence has now revitalised Banagher. Angling and all watersports are very much to the fore. A spacious marina caters for the ever- increasing river traffic. Along the river banks the Shannon Callows are a treasure house of wild flowers and bird life.

Birr, Offaly, Ireland

945. Birr

Birr is one of Ireland's finest Georgian towns, with many town houses and public buildings of note along its tree-lined malls. Delightful river walks and heritage trails allow the visitor to explore an atmosphere of leisurely elegance in an unhurried fashion. Dominating the town, but integrated with it in a unique manner, Birr Castle Demesne, the seat of the Earl of Rosse for fourteen generations, is open all year round. Its gardens of exquisite plants, rare shrubs and trees are among the best in Europe. The giant shell of the once largest telescope in the world - just one of the scientific wonders of Birr - still adorns the front lawn, Birr is very much part of the hidden Ireland, a gem in an Irish midland setting, a rare place awaiting discovery by the discerning visitor.
